<Breaking News> Cellist Yo Kitamura (20) Wins First Prize in Cello Division of Gorges Enescu International Competition!
In early morning of September 11, 2024 (Japan time), cellist in our roster Yo Kitamura (20) won first prize in the cello division of the Georges Enescu International Competition, which was held in Bucharest, Romania!
Yo Kitamura (20) was born in Hyogo Prefecture in 2004. He has studied with Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi and Nobuko Yamazaki. He won first prize in the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in 2017 and second prize in the 2022 Khachaturian International Competition. In 2023, he achieved the feat of winning the 29th International Johannes Brahms Competition as well as the Music Competition of Japan (cello division). Kitamura has been studying with Jens-Peter Maintz at Berlin University of the Arts since 2023.
In the final round of the competition, Kitamura performed Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in B minor, Op.104. His rich musicality and future promise were highly evaluated.
Kitamura plays a 1668 “Cassini” cello, on loan from Ueno Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.
In Japan, a recital is scheduled on Wednesday, December 11 at Hakuju Hall. We hope you will look forward to his performance of the program: Beethoven Sonata No. 4, Brahms Sonata No. 2, Janáček “Pohádka”, and Shostakovich Cello Sonata.
