Akiko Ebi receives the 2024 Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Award!
Pianist Akiko Ebi has been awarded the 2024 Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Award.
This award is presented by the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Cultural Affairs Commissioner to individuals who have made outstanding achievements in cultural activities and contributed to the advancement of culture in Japan, and to those who have contributed to the dissemination of Japanese culture overseas and international cultural exchange.
Since she was awarded the 2nd Grand Prix in the Long-Thibaud International Competition and 5th prize in the International Chopin Competition, Akiko Ebi has performed in 38 countries around the world. Based in Tokyo and Paris, she has appeared in distinguished concert halls including the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Salle Pleyel, Gewandhaus, Berlin Philharmonie, Wigmore Hall, and Suntory Hall.
A two-piano duo concert performed by Akiko Ebi and Martha Argerich has been televised often in countries throughout Europe and elsewhere, and in 2022 th duo concert finally took place in Japan. The performance by the two artists, who have strong ties of friendship, garnered much attention.
Ebi is also actively engaged in the instruction of young musicians, and is a sought-after teacher of master classes in countries around the world.
As chairperson of the Frédéric Chopin Society of Japan and of the Yokohama International Piano Concert Planning Committee, Ebi is committed to the encouragement of young musicians. She has earned the great trust of renowned artists and young musicians throughout the world.
Akiko Ebi has served on the juries of many major international competitions, including the Hamamatsu Piano Competition, Chopin Competition, and Long-Thibaud Competition. In 2025 she is serving as jury vice-chairperson of the Sendai International Music Competition (piano division).
